First, a shoutout to Yelp and why it is a foodie’s best friend.  I do not live anywhere near Coconut Grove so I heard about this restaurant from Yelp reviewers.  Next, I used my new favorite feature of Yelp and I bookmarked the LoKal.  Now anytime I am out I can use the bookmarks to see what is nearby.  This is how it all went down following the Sprung Beer Festival.  After five hours of drinking we need a place to grab some food and have even more beers!  I was excited to find that LoKal was a close walk away and I convinced my group.

With the overflow of the beer festival and a typical Saturday night crowd, the place was packed.  Although it sucks for wait time, it’s a good sign the this place must be good.  The hostess said our wait would be 45 minutes to an hour.  We walked outside to mope when the hostess tracked us down and said we could sit right now as long as we would be ok with sharing the end of a long table that another group was already sitting at.  Um, hell yes!  So we lucked out with getting seats immediately.
I really liked their menu.  Who doesn’t like a gastropub menu anyway?  Chicken and waffles sounded interesting.  In the end I went with the gluttonous burger served on a glazed donut with a fried egg and a side of defibrillator.  This is the second time I have had a glzed donut with a burger and both times have been magical.  The glazed gooeyness mixes so well with the flavors of the egg and meat.  The sweet potato fries were marvelous.  Like candy!  I also tried the chili and thought it was excellent with a great kick and served with chips.

No gastropub would be complete without a reputable beer list and the LoKal did not disappoint.  My only disappointment (and it was not their fault) was that the best, hard to find beer bottles will only in bomber size and therefore too expensive for me to get on my own.  But if you have someone to share with then no worries.  Regardless, there will plenty of excellent beers in regular size bottle too!
